Who we are

A small outfit with deep roots in the north

Canopy Current started with two friends who'd spent years leading informal walks through the hills around Wiang district. Word got around. By early 2023 there were enough requests to make it a proper operation — one that stayed small on purpose. We kept the staff local, the group sizes manageable, and the pace honest.

The name comes from the two things we love most about this region: the dense canopy above the forest paths and the rivers that cut through the valley floors below. Both are worth paying attention to. We just help you slow down enough to notice them.

What to expect

Straightforward from first enquiry

No hidden fees, no generic itineraries. Here's how each part of the booking works.

Clear pricing up front

Every activity lists a full price in Thai Baht. What you see is what you pay — no add-ons at pickup, no obligatory tips built into the rate.

Flexible start times

Forest walks depart between 07:00 and 09:00 depending on season. Kayak hire runs from 08:00 to 16:00. House stays check in after 14:00; we'll hold bags from 10:00.

A real person replies

Send a form or call +66 92 617 3580. One of our team responds within a few hours, usually faster. We can discuss group size, accessibility needs, or any other questions.

Morning walks

Shade, sound, and the occasional hornbill

The forest north of Chiang Rai gets surprisingly cool before 10:00. Our guides pick routes that stay under canopy cover for most of the walk, which matters in May through September when the humidity climbs. You'll cross shallow streams, pass bamboo thickets, and reach at least one waterfall with a pool deep enough to stand in.

Group size stays at eight or under. That's not a marketing point — it's how you actually hear the forest instead of the group.

House stays

A base that feels like it belongs here

The house sits on a lane about 4 km from Wiang centre — quiet enough to sleep with the windows open but close enough to cycle in for market days. Breakfast is simple: fruit, sticky rice, coffee, a boiled egg. The hosts leave you a handwritten map of the best spots within cycling distance.

Two nights gives you time to settle in and actually use the bicycles. Most guests end up staying an extra night.

Kayaker on a calm stretch of the Kok River in Chiang Rai
River days

The Kok River at your own pace

Sit-on-top kayaks are forgiving and stable — a sensible choice for the flat sections of the Kok River that run near Chiang Rai town. The wetsuit top keeps sun off your arms and adds a little warmth on cooler mornings. The dry bag handles a phone, snacks, and a small camera.

Return is easy: riverside pickup or a short paddle back to the launch point, whichever suits your day. The briefing before you head out covers current conditions, any seasonal changes, and how to flag a boat if you need a hand.

How we work

A few things we take seriously

Outdoor activities in northern Thailand carry real considerations — weather, terrain, river conditions. We build our operations around those realities rather than around a brochure.

Safety briefings before every activity

Every walk and kayak hire starts with a short brief on conditions, what to do if something changes, and how to reach us by phone.

Routes selected on the day

Walk routes are chosen each morning based on weather, recent rain, and group fitness. We don't run the same path regardless of conditions.

Local knowledge that matters

Our guides grew up near these trails. They know which paths flood after rain, where the good swim spots are, and which village roads are worth the detour.

Equipment checked between hires

Kayaks, paddles, and wetsuits are inspected and rinsed after each use. If something isn't in good shape, it doesn't go out again that day.

How we approach this work

Three things shape every decision we make about routes, equipment, and guests.

Keep it local

Guides, hosts, and suppliers are all from within 30 km of Chiang Rai. The money stays in the area it comes from.

Low-impact operations

Small groups, no motorised vehicles on forest trails, and equipment cleaned with biodegradable products. Not a policy document — just how we do it.

Honest about limitations

We'll tell you when a trail isn't suitable, when river conditions aren't right, or when a stay doesn't suit a particular group. Better before you book than after.

What people say

The waterfall walk was the best morning of our whole trip. The guide took us off the main path and we barely saw another person for four hours. Swim stops at two different pools. Worth every baht.

Stayed two nights in the rural house. Had the bicycles out both days and found a morning market on our own. The breakfast was modest but the coffee was genuinely good. We extended to a third night.

The kayak hire was easy and the briefing was short and practical. The Kok River moves at a comfortable pace and there were herons in every bend. We were out for six hours without meaning to be.

Common questions

Before you book

What fitness level is needed for the forest walk?
The walk suits steady walkers comfortable with 3–4 hours of uneven forest terrain. There's no technical climbing, but some sections have roots and loose gravel. If anyone in your group has a specific concern, mention it when you enquire — we can advise on route options.
Do I need kayaking experience?
No prior experience is needed. Sit-on-top kayaks are stable and forgiving. The launch briefing covers paddling technique, how to stay stable, and what to do if you capsize (it's unlikely but possible). The sections we use are calm and manageable for first-timers.
What's the cancellation policy?
Cancellations with more than 48 hours' notice receive a full refund. Within 48 hours, we'll do our best to reschedule you rather than retain any payment. If we cancel due to weather or conditions, you receive a full refund or rescheduling with no extra charge.
When's the best time of year to visit?
November to February is the dry cool season — comfortable for walks and stays, and the river is clear. The wet season (June–October) makes the forest lusher and the waterfalls stronger, though some trail sections can be muddy. We run activities year-round and adjust routes seasonally.
Can I book all three activities together?
Yes. Many guests combine a house stay with a walk on day one and a kayak on day two. When you enquire, let us know your dates and we'll map out a workable sequence. There's no combined package rate, but we'll make sure the logistics fit together.
How is my personal data handled?
Information you submit is used only to manage your booking and communicate with you. We don't sell or share it with third parties for marketing. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
